The mystery girl. Posted for some years now as the blog's signature song,
I still can't find any info about Charlene P.M. from New Orleans
nor about the obscure F-W records label. (F-W 10002-79)
Pressed by Ville Platte Record Mfg. Co., Ville Platte, Louisiana.
The 1975 released song 'Believe What I Say' is Charlene's only known 45.
Some sources mention 1979 as the release date.
It was co-written with Wardell Quezergue who arranged and produced it.
Sam Henry wrote the flip 'Loving You'.
'Believe What I Say' appeared on the 2003 album
'Don't Be No Square, Get Hip To Quezergue'.

Margie Alexander
Deep soul at its best. What a voice. One of my favorite soul sisters.
She was born Marjorie Lucille Alexander in Carrollton,
Georgia, on October 11, 1948.
Margie began singing in her church. By the middle of the 1960s,
she moved to Los Angeles and sang with the Gospel Crusaders.
In 1968, Margie returned to Georgia, working at Club 400 in Atlanta,
where she joined Clarence Carter's band as a back-up singer.
In 1971, she landed a recording contract with Atlantic Records where
Carter produced her single 'Can I Be Your Main Thing'. By the late
1970s, Margie was in Chicago where she recorded one single
of which 'Wat'cha trying to do to me', recorded in 1977, is a superb piece
of soul. It was the peak of Margie's singing career.
It's really a shame there's still no album release except a gospel one
titled 'God Is In Control'. That one she recorded in Atlanta, Georgia
with Paul Beasley's Sowega Choir in 1991.
Margie Alexander passed away March 26, 2013.
It's a shame, there's still no album.
Painting of Margie by Marten Tonnis.
The Triple Souls with Sonny Jones at Cosimo Recording Studio, New Orleans, 1969.
The Triple Souls
According to soul books and other sources, there were
over 500 known girl groups in the U.S.
of which many were rare and some obscure.
Omitted from most sources but worth mentioning: The Triple Souls.
Formed in 1966, they were active during three years in New Orleans.
Members were Mercedes Morris, Sena Fletcher and Inez Cheatham.
They sang as a leading backup group for Betty Harris,
Robert Parker, Sonny Jones, Johnny Adams, Curley Moore and Lee Dorsey.
Sena Fletcher, who began her career singing gospel in church,
was hired by Allen Toussaint in 1966.
At some recordings there was a fourth, unknown female singer.
Not sure if they ever released a record as The Triple Souls.
All that is known, Sena Fletcher recorded several songs
of which 'It's Not Unusual' and 'All The Love Of My Man',
destined to become a single, ended up in a drawer.
An Eddie Bo produced album titled Sena Fletcher 'Teach Me' was
released in 1997 with nine tracks she recorded in 1966 till 1970,
then re-released as Mary Jane Hooper.
Mary Jane Hooper's debut single was 'Don't Change Nothing' in 1966
and her best-known 'That's How Strong My Love Is' in 1968.
Inez Cheatham recorded 'Lover And A Friend',
a duet with Eddie Bo, released as a 45 in 1968.
No other information about Mercedes Morris.
Conclusion: Thus Mary Jane Hooper was Sena Fletcher, a pseudonym
recommended by either Eddie Bo or Al Scramuzza, owner of Scram Records.
Others say that Hooper recorded under the name Inez Cheatham.
But according to Eddie Bo who insisted that Mary Jane Hooper
and Inez Cheatham were different girls. Bo was right.
The Raelettes
An unreleased studio recording session with The James Brown Band.
at Ray Dobard Music City, 1815 Alcatraz, in San Francisco, May 1961.
One song from that session was with singer Vermettya Royster whom he had
under contract which was never released. Featuring Nat Kendrick on drums,
along with other members of his band and James Brown on organ.
This track finally surfaced 60 years after the ad-hoc session date in 2011.
Thanks to Alec Palao for his research and Soul on Top.
Vermettya was born in 1940 in Jacksonville, Florida. She sang gospel with
The Clara Ward Singers, then soul with The Raelets and the The Ikettes.
In 1969 she joined Sisters Love, then The Chocolate Kisses,
Groove Fiction and she recorded with Jambo in the mid 1970s.
In 1979 she released an album titled 'On My Own'
with the song 'Last Mistake' which was released as a 45.
And one solo album ‘On The Half Shell’ released in 2009.
A compilation album was released on Motorcity OMP Records in 2011.
In 1992, Vermettya traveled to London where she made her UK debut
with concerts on September 25 and 26 at the Gospel Tabernacle Assembly.
According to sources, Vermettya resides in London.
A rare 1994 interview with songs:
Vermettya Royster in London by Bell Randle.
was born in 1925 in New York.
She started writing songs at a young age.
At 25, she wrote the song 'Please Tell Me Why'
and gave it to her friend Varetta Dillard who recorded it.
it was released on Savoy Records in 1952 and was a minor hit.
After selling a song to her idol Ruth Brown,
Eloise had the confidence to record one of her songs herself.
She did a demo and sent it to Varetta Dillard’s manager Lee Magic
who wanted to record the song, including a contract.
As Lois Hinds, the song 'Loving In Vain Again' was released
on September 16, 1952 on the Okeh Records label.
It was backed with a heavy promotion.
In November of 1952 it entered the Billboard Chart
describing the song as a ‘Rhythm Opus’.
The very first time Lois Hinds heard her song was in a restaurant.
The flip side of ‘Loving In Vain Again’ is ‘A Fool (In Love With You)’.
Lois recorded two more singles on Okeh Records in 1953.
In April, her 45 was released with ‘That’s Alright For You’
with the B-side ‘It must Have Been (Two Other People)’
and in August, the 45 ‘The Parade Has Passed By Me’ with
on the flip ‘Mend Your Ways’ (which was also recorded by Ruth Brown.)
Both singles didn’t score well.
Unfortunately, after 1953, Lois Hinds went into obscurity.
In 2014, journalist Donovan X. Ramsey wrote an emotional story
about Lois Hinds titled 'In the Bronx, a lady sings the Blues'
Margie Hendrix
'Do Right Baby'
This great song, written by Jo Armstead, was recorded in
Memphis, Tennessee around 1968.
Margie Hendrix was born in Register, Georgia in 1935.
At a young age she played piano for the children’s choir at her local church.
At 18 she moved to Brooklyn, New York.
Margie’s first recording, in 1954, was ‘Good Treatment’
with the flip ‘'Every Time' on Lamp Records.
In 1956, at age 21, she joined The Cookies, singing with
Ray Charles, then they became The Raelettes in 1958.
Margie started her solo career in 1964 with a Tangerine Records release
‘Let No One Hold You’ and the great flip 'A Lover's Blues'.
For Mercury Records she released five singles of which 'Baby'
from 1965 is a great bluesy soul song.
In 1967, Margie recorded four other songs for the Mercury label in Memphis.
But the last two singles didn’t score well and the label dropped her in 1967.
In 1968, Margie signed a record deal with Soundstage and recorded two 45s
in Memphis of which 'Do Right Baby' wasn’t released until 1978
on a various female artists album by Vivid Sound Records, Japan
and on the album 'Southern Soul Sisters' in 1987
on Charly R&B Records, released in the U.K..
Her last recording deal ended in 1969.
Margie Hendrix faded into obscurity and died in 1973 at the age of 38.
Gangster Soul Girlz Harmony
George Miller Jr. started collecting rare soul 45s in 1994.
In late 1996 he teamed up with Pico Rivera and Los Angeles based
Record Collectors and with friends Robert Ramos and Sal Rodriguez.
They collaborated and started Lost Soul Records and Lost Soul Oldies Series.
In 2001, George created his own record label Sons of Soul Records and
was In charge of ‘The Heart & Soul’ series under ‘The Lost Soul Records’ umbrella.
George released a series of albums entitled ‘Gangster Soul Harmony’
and ‘Gangster Soul Girlz’ Harmony'.
He handpicked many unreleased tracks by rare local girl groups from the 1960s,
like Rosie Lopez, Gloria and Relations, The Georgettes and Jackie Moppins.
When the originally album volume 1 debuted back in 2007,
it became an instant classic and was quickly sold out. It was followed by
volume 2, 3, 4 and 5 which became popular amongst rare soul collectors.
The album sleeves are original and well conceived and
probably designed by George Miller Jr. himself
using old photobooth snapshots of him, family and friends.
The ‘Gangster Soul Harmony’ series currently has 14 titles.
Most were re-released in 2015 and again, volume 1 sold out quickly.
George Miller Jr. also creates events in Los Angeles,
like the Oldies, Sweet Soul and Funk ‘Confessin’ a Feeling’.

Finding more info about The Otisettes is like
searching for that needle in a haystack.
After a long search, here’s what I came up with so far:
Three childhood friends from Compton in California,
Vera Hamilton, twin sisters Alesia and Tiresia Butler joined
18 years old Barbara Jean Cooks, aka Stonye Figueroa,
who attended San Diego City College.
In 1966 the four girls became The Otisettes
and began performing with the Johnny Otis Show.
In 1971 they recorded two songs. ‘In Your Arms (I’m Gonna Stay)’
and ‘Your Kiss (Is Fading Away)’ with Vera Hamilton as lead singer.
Vera didn’t need a microphone. She was loud and on key.
Alesia Butler took on the highs of the songs.
Her sister Tiresia Butler carried the melody of lower notes if
Vera didn’t chime in on either one. The single was released in 1971
on John Otis’ own record label Jonco.
In 1972, The Otisettes and The Johnny Otis Show recorded
four songs released on 45s by Epic Records.
One of the singles was with ‘Everything You Said Came True’
of which the B-side ‘Sitting Alone (In My Lonely Room)’ is a superb
piece of soul and their most well-known song to date.
Songwriters were B. Bradford and Johnny Otis
and beautifully arranged by Johnny Otis and Roger Hamilton Spotts.
B. Bradlford's name was omitted from a re-release.
There are no signs anywhere the 45 was promoted and
if the song 'Sitting Alone (In My Lonely Room)’
reached Billboard’s Soul Chart in 1972.
The Johnny Otis Show performed in the U.K., Japan, China, Guam,
Africa, France and all over the United Staes and Canada.
In 1974, after being Otisettes members for three years, Stonye
Figueroa and Vera Hamilton sang with The Ikettes for Tina Turner.
In 1978, Barbara Jean Cooks sang vocals on two songs
with Johnny Otis and The Otisettes: 'Skunk (Booty)' and
'Don't It Make You Feel Good' released as a 45 on Jazz World Records.
Vera Hamilton passed away on August 31, 2013.
Alesia Butler resides in Los Angeles and Tiresia Butler in Las Vegas.

“The Pot Can’t Talk About The Kettle”.
Her backing band included members of the Avengers.
Helene, born October 21, 1947, was one of the first
deep soul singers from Miami, Florida.

A rare photo of the ‘Mother of the Blues’ appeared in the
St. Louis Argus, a newspaper serving the African American
community in St. Louis, Missouri, May 3, 1929.
This blog is a dedication to all soul sisters,
especially those who didn’t get the recognition they deserve
due to racial discrimination and prejudice based on their dark skin.
Unpaid royalties in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s were very common.
Soul sister Marva Whitney summed it up well:
“Here I am, pinching pennies and they’re making millions.”
